Two Fall Road Trips 2023

The first trip was doing the Selkirk Loop. We headed first to eastern Washington, then northern Idaho, then British Columbia. We highly recommend.

                                                                   Priest Lake, Idaho

The FREE ferry across Kootenay Lake

We headed to Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park. It was beautiful, nice hikes, good place to ride our bikes and the added bonus was that the Kokanee salmon were swimming up river to spawn.

View of the lake

The visitor's center in the park was wonderful and we learned a lot about the fresh water salmon.

From there we headed to Nelson, BC. and then
Beaver Creek Provincial Park

The next morning we headed west with a stop
in Metaline Falls where we had a great
breakfast at "The Farmhouse".

We stopped in Colville for fuel and to stock up on food and then headed to                                                to Steamboat Rock Campground in Eastern Washington.

                                                               Along the way:

                                                                 Deer Meadows

                                                            Grand Coulee Dam

Heading towards home -west along the Columbia

The second road trip was in our new car "Otto" - visiting friends and family. First stop was visiting my two nieces in Oregon and my sister who is recovering from surgery. From there we headed to Santa Cruz to visit Jim's college friend Joel and his wife Judy. We had a fun three days there catching up :

Joel and Jim lived in a house in Boulder Creek
and also built a house there - the start of Jim's building career!
Out for a walk along Lighthouse Point and lunch on the Coast in Santa Cruz
with Joel and Judy.

Next stop was a three day visit with our cruising friends Jim and Jean (Kanga) in Livermore, CA. We went for walks, a drive around wine country, ate some wonderful food at some great restaurants, and went for a sail on a nearby Lake Del Valle (maiden voyage for their new to them day sailer). And we got to meet Molly:

The last stop was with Jim's brother in San Francisco.  It's always fun to visit him and we had an added bonus because my good friend from middle school and high school drove up to SF from Palo Alto to spend a day with us.

Tunnel Top Park in SF (new)

Golden Gate Park

Bethie (my good friend from middle/high school)
on Dave's deck.

John and Beth drove up from Palo Alto to spend the
day with us.

We headed home on October 21, spent the night in Medford and arrived home on Bainbridge about 5PM on October 22, 2023

It had been a long time since we were able to take a road trip and it was great to get out in the world again. Jim continues to slowly improve. His next scans will be in a month or two which will tell us how he is progressing.

Mexico Ferry Travel: Getting from Guaymas to Baja and Back

Since our car was in Puerto Escondido in Baja and we and Loomba-Loomba were in San Carlos on the mainland, we decided to make an adventure out of getting the car over to the mainland and do a Copper Canyon trip on the way back to Guaymas. This involved two different ferry trips, a bus, lots of driving, and a train. Ferry travel is not cheap or easy in Mexico.  We arrived at the 8PM ferry  (Guaymas – Santa Rosalia) on Saturday May 27 th at 6PM, as required.  There had been some pretty strong northerlies for a few days and the ferry isn’t very big so we asked if it was definitely going to sail. They said yes so our friend, Ray, who had given us a ride from San Carlos, left.  At 7:45 they decided the weather was too bad to go – next ferry would be Monday (maybe). We took a taxi back to the boat and decided to wait until Tuesday the 29 th . This time we had Ray ( who speaks fluent Spanish) call and make a reservation in a cabin for us for Tuesday. ...

North to Southeast Alaska

Our old friend, Roger, invited us to join him (as crew) on his first leg home from Sitka to Seattle. We did the first leg (and most scenic) from Sitka to Petersburg. He has been heading north on a boat from the Seattle area every summer since he was a little kid so he knows the area well. We flew into Sitka (arriving at 3PM), got a taxi to the harbor, jumped into the skiff, headed out to the boat, and we were on our way to Kalinin Bay on Kruzof Island for the night.  (Jim's hat says "Where's the Fish") The next morning we headed north and into the Pacific along the Khaz Peninsula, inside Klokachef Island, up around Khaz head and then various anchorages around Baranof Island, Admiralty Island and Kupreanof Island. The weather wasn't the greatest, but we did have some sunny days, mostly calm waters, lots of wildlife and good fishing and beautiful scenery:
