After ten days in Caleta Partida on Isla Espiritu Santo
waiting for a break in the parade of very strong northerlies
that were producing large short period seas
we finally had a window to make our way down
Cerralvo Channel (a notorious wind funnel)
to Ensenada de los Muertos.
We had the wind
and the current with us so it was comfortable and fast
sail. While just off of La Ventana (no other boats around) and three
miles from shore on either side we heard a shout.
We both jumped up - thinking someone either
needed rescuing or we were about to run into a small boat.
To our amazement there was a hydrofoil kite surfer
just off of our stern with a HUGE smile on his face!
His kite just missed our mast. We didn't have time
to snap a picture and he was gone just as fast as
he appeared! That was a first for us.
Sunset at Ensenada de los Muertos and.......... |
Happy hour! It was cold............. |
Every afternoon the wind increased. This is a very sheltered bay from northerlies and as Jim says: It was honking! |
The seas can get wicked in the Sea of Cortez and
it takes a few days for the seas to die down after
strong winds. We waited in Ensenada de los Muertos
for six days.
It's a good place to hang out. There are two restaurants
with wifi that works most of the time, a nice long
beach to walk, and pangueros coming and going to fish
or to take out visiting gringos from La Paz.
The view from the restaurant at Hotel Bahia de los Suenos at one end of the beach |
and the view from the 1535 Beach Club restaurant at the other end of the bay (Loomba-Loomba is the white speck in the middle of the picture) |

On our morning walk....... |
The seas were flattening out - heading out the next morning |
We left at 4am on March 8th. Once again we
had the current and wind pushing us along.
It was a consistent, comfortable and fast sail:
The wind dropped off over night and we
eventually had to turn on the engine.
Beautiful sunrise as we approached Mazatlan |
We made it to Mazatlan in record time (for us):
190 miles in 29 hours!
We are now in Marina Mazatlan where we are leaving
Loomba-Loomba for two weeks while we do an inland
trip to Oaxaca and Mexico City.
