After Yellowstone and Grand Teton we stopped at Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area to camp for the night.
From there we went to Dinosaur National Monument. It's a bit out of the way
and not easy to get to, but we have been there before and liked it so we decided
to return and were glad we did. The weather was nice and there were no crowds.
A bonus was the amazing petroglyphs on the way:
From there we went to Colorado National Monument:
Nice Campgrounds, beautiful views and Big Horn Sheep!
From there we headed toward Highway 145 and up over Lizard Pass (10,222') and then camped on the Dolores River.
Next Stop Mesa Verde:
We were here a few years ago, but were tent camping then and we got rained out.
This time we had great weather.
The ruins are spectacular and it's well worth it to take a ranger guided tour.
My favorite, however, is the Wetherill Mesa.
The Park Point Fire Lookout has a 360 degree view for miles:
No cars are allowed near the ruins on Wetherill Mesa, but there are good hiking and biking trails and wild horses!
From Mesa Verde we went to Canyon de Chelly with a stop
at Hubble Trading Post.
The highlight was our private jeep tour in the canyon with a Navajo guide who was born and raised in the area and lived in the Canyon in the summers.
Hubble Trading Post:
Amazing Baskets and Blankets.
Winslow, Arizona:
From Winslow we stopped in Payson for two nights, drove through
Pinetop and Alpine, and then to
Lyman Lake State Park and Roper Lake State Park
before heading to Drew's. It's been nice to be able to regroup for a few days
and visit the boys and the dogs.
We will be crossing the border Sunday, Oct. 13
