Fall is Here!

This is the first time in eleven years we have been in the Pacific Northwest at this time of year.  It's nice to see the fall colors, but it's also cold and wet. We are having a tough time acclimating, but are keeping busy with yard and house projects in between medical appointments.  There is so much building going on that it's difficult to get electricians, plumbers, etc. to work us into their schedules.

Jim's treatment is progressing. He has his immunotherapy infusions every three weeks and kidney stent replacements will be every three months. We really like his team of doctors. The biggest downside is that he is exhausted most of the time (his body is fighting hard against this sarcoma) and he isn't supposed to lift anything over ten pounds.  Needless to say, having been a builder/carpenter, he's getting really frustrated about not being able to do the things he would be capable of doing if he were in better health. Things are slowly progressing, though, and we are hoping to be moving from the garage apartment to the house in a month or so.

There has been quite a bit of interest in Loomba-Loomba lately so our son went down to San Carlos last week to get our personal stuff off of Loomba-Loomba. I was going to go with him, but because of Covid and Jim's compromised immune system we decided that I shouldn't go. With the help of Eduardo and FaceTime calls he was able to gather up our things in a matter of three days, take it to his house in Arizona, and he will drive it up to our house when he comes for Christmas. We appreciated his effort sooo much, but it was sad to see L-L without all the personal things that made her our home!

The only thing he didn't have room for was our paddle boards. They are still on the boat. If anyone is in San Carlos and would like to buy our paddle boards please let us know. They are both hybrid boards (good surfing and good paddling), they both come with expensive carbon fiber paddles, leashes and covers. They can nest together in a kayak stanchion rack if you do it just right. I will be posting on some FB groups soon.

So to all our cruising friends out there.........we will miss you! Please keep in touch.

P.S: If anyone wants to follow Jim's Storm Tactics (A private FB group of Jim's medical updates) please send me an email or a PM on FB and I will send you an invite.

Mexico Ferry Travel: Getting from Guaymas to Baja and Back

Since our car was in Puerto Escondido in Baja and we and Loomba-Loomba were in San Carlos on the mainland, we decided to make an adventure out of getting the car over to the mainland and do a Copper Canyon trip on the way back to Guaymas. This involved two different ferry trips, a bus, lots of driving, and a train. Ferry travel is not cheap or easy in Mexico.  We arrived at the 8PM ferry  (Guaymas – Santa Rosalia) on Saturday May 27 th at 6PM, as required.  There had been some pretty strong northerlies for a few days and the ferry isn’t very big so we asked if it was definitely going to sail. They said yes so our friend, Ray, who had given us a ride from San Carlos, left.  At 7:45 they decided the weather was too bad to go – next ferry would be Monday (maybe). We took a taxi back to the boat and decided to wait until Tuesday the 29 th . This time we had Ray ( who speaks fluent Spanish) call and make a reservation in a cabin for us for Tuesday. ...

North to Southeast Alaska

Our old friend, Roger, invited us to join him (as crew) on his first leg home from Sitka to Seattle. We did the first leg (and most scenic) from Sitka to Petersburg. He has been heading north on a boat from the Seattle area every summer since he was a little kid so he knows the area well. We flew into Sitka (arriving at 3PM), got a taxi to the harbor, jumped into the skiff, headed out to the boat, and we were on our way to Kalinin Bay on Kruzof Island for the night.  (Jim's hat says "Where's the Fish") The next morning we headed north and into the Pacific along the Khaz Peninsula, inside Klokachef Island, up around Khaz head and then various anchorages around Baranof Island, Admiralty Island and Kupreanof Island. The weather wasn't the greatest, but we did have some sunny days, mostly calm waters, lots of wildlife and good fishing and beautiful scenery:
