It's all about the music and the food
with a few excellent museums thrown in.
Why are you in New Orleans you ask?????
Well......we wanted to take a road trip to the
Monarch Butterfly Reserve near Morelia, MX
and our six month visas were going to
need renewal before April first. Our solution:
Fly to New Orleans where neither of
us had been and then fly to Morelia.
We arrived in New Orleans on Ash Wednesday -
the day after "Fat Tuesday".
In the morning we walked from our hotel in the
Garden District to the French Quarter
following the parade route.
Lots of fencing to keep things from getting trampled |
Every tree, street sign, and light pole was dripping with beads |
Sani cans around the round-about |
We took this ferry across the Mississippi and had lunch in Algiers |
View of NO on the way back |
A walk along the river |
Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral - heart of the French Quarter |
There is music on the street all afternoon and night
everywhere in the French Quarter
We also went to two jazz shows.
One at the jazz museum and one at
Preservation Hall. They were both great!
Bourbon Street at Dusk - just starting to heat up |
Eating is one of the main events in New Orleans:
Two icons are:
Cafe du Monde - known for their beignets
and Central Grocery Company known for their
HUGE muffuletta sandwiches ( we split a half)
We walked or rode the street cars everywhere.
This is an amazing museum - well worth spending a day |
Bourbon Street in the morning:
Louis Armstrong Park |
We just read in the paper this morning that Pope Francis
is scheduled to be in Morelia when we were planning to
be there. We tried to get a hotel reservation
(which usually isn't necessary), but couldn't.
We're going to bus it to Patzcuaro (30 miles away
from Morelia) from the Morelia airport.
